Purpose of the Test

A throat swab for bacterial culture and sensitivity (C/S) is performed to identify the presence of bacterial infection in the throat. It is often requested when a person has symptoms of a throat infection such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, or fever.

When this test is required

A throat swab for bacterial C/S may be requested when a person has symptoms of a throat infection that may be caused by bacteria or if they are at an increased risk of complications from a bacterial infection.

What the Test Detects

The throat swab is cultured in a laboratory to detect the presence of bacteria. If bacteria are detected, further testing is done to identify the specific type of bacteria present and to determine which antibiotics will be most effective in treating the infection.

Preparation for the Test

There is usually no special preparation needed for a throat swab for bacterial C/S.

Sample Requirements

A throat swab is taken from the back of the throat using a sterile cotton swab.

Additional Notes

A throat swab for bacterial C/S is just one tool that healthcare providers use to diagnose and treat infections. It is important to follow the advice of the healthcare provider and to take all prescribed medications as directed.
