Purpose of the Test

The H & E (Hematoxylin and Eosin) stain is a common laboratory test used to examine tissue samples under a microscope. The test helps in diagnosing various diseases and conditions by identifying abnormal cells and tissues.

When this test is required

The test is usually requested when an individual has symptoms of a disease or condition that affects a specific organ or tissue. It may also be requested to monitor the progression of a disease or to evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment.

What the Test Detects

The test uses H & E staining to highlight the different structures of cells and tissues under a microscope. Hematoxylin stains the nuclei of cells blue, while Eosin stains the cytoplasm and extracellular matrix pink or red.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific test preparation required. However, the healthcare provider may advise the individual to avoid certain medications or foods that may interfere with the test results.

Sample Requirements

The sample required for this test is usually a tissue biopsy or surgical specimen.

Additional Notes

The H & E stain is a routine test that is widely used in pathology laboratories. It is a safe and non-invasive test that does not cause any discomfort to the individual. However, it may give inconclusive or false-positive results, and therefore, it should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical information.
