Purpose of the Test

The Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) IgG test is done to determine whether a person has been infected with the virus or has been vaccinated against it.

When this test is required

The test is requested when a person’s immune status for varicella zoster virus needs to be determined, either as part of routine screening or in response to a suspected exposure to the virus.

What the Test Detects

The test detects the presence of IgG antibodies against the varicella zoster virus in the blood.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is required for this test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample.

Additional Notes

A positive result on the VZV IgG test indicates immunity to the virus, but it does not necessarily indicate lifelong immunity. Immunity may decrease over time, and a booster vaccine may be recommended in certain cases. In addition, a positive result may not differentiate between immunity from natural infection versus immunity from vaccination. If you have any concerns or questions about the results of the test, it is important to discuss them with your healthcare provider.
