Purpose of the Test

Serum unconjugated bilirubin is tested to evaluate liver function and diagnose liver diseases such as jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and other conditions that affect the liver.

When this test is required

What the Test Detects

The test measures the level of unconjugated bilirubin in the blood, which is a waste product produced during the breakdown of red blood cells. Bilirubin is processed by the liver and excreted in the bile, but when there is an excess amount of unconjugated bilirubin in the blood, it can lead to jaundice.
