Purpose of the Test

Serum unconjugated bilirubin is tested to evaluate liver function and diagnose liver diseases such as jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and other conditions that affect the liver.

When this test is required

The test is typically requested when a person has symptoms of liver disease or abnormal liver function test results.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the level of unconjugated bilirubin in the blood, which is a waste product produced during the breakdown of red blood cells. Bilirubin is processed by the liver and excreted in the bile, but when there is an excess amount of unconjugated bilirubin in the blood, it can lead to jaundice.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific preparation required for the test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample drawn from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

The test should be interpreted along with other liver function tests, medical history, and physical examination by a healthcare provider. The test results may also be affected by certain medications and other factors, so it’s essential to inform the healthcare provider about any medications or supplements being taken.
