Purpose of the Test

The Serum PIVKA-II Level test is used to detect and monitor hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a type of liver cancer, in individuals with chronic liver disease.

When this test is required

The test may be requested as part of routine surveillance for HCC in individuals with chronic liver disease. It may also be ordered for individuals with a history of HCC to monitor for cancer recurrence.

What the Test Detects

The Serum PIVKA-II Level test measures the levels of a protein called protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) in the blood. PIVKA-II is produced by liver cells and is elevated in individuals with HCC.

Preparation for the Test

No specific test preparation is needed, but you should inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample.

Additional Notes

HCC is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. Early detection and treatment can improve outcomes. Regular surveillance is important for individuals with chronic liver disease. Elevated PIVKA-II levels may also be seen in other conditions, such as vitamin K deficiency or other types of cancer, so the test should be interpreted in the context of other clinical and laboratory findings.
