Purpose of the Test

Serum Monospot is a blood test used to help diagnose infectious mononucleosis, a viral infection that causes symptoms such as fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue.

When this test is required

Serum Monospot is typically requested when a person has symptoms of infectious mononucleosis and other tests have not provided a clear diagnosis.

What the Test Detects

Serum Monospot measures the levels of antibodies called heterophile antibodies in the blood. Heterophile antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), the virus that causes infectious mononucleosis.

Preparation for the Test

No special test preparation is usually required. However, it is important to inform your healthcare provider of any medications you are taking, as certain medications can affect the test results.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for Serum Monospot testing.

Additional Notes

Other tests, such as a CBC and a throat culture, may also be performed to help diagnose infectious mononucleosis. Treatment for infectious mononucleosis usually involves managing symptoms, such as rest and hydration, as the infection typically resolves on its own within a few weeks.
