Purpose of the Test

The test may be ordered when a person has signs and symptoms of HSV infection or to confirm a previous diagnosis of HSV. It may also be performed in individuals who are at risk of acquiring HSV infection or sexually active individuals who are concerned about having been exposed to the virus.

When this test is required

A positive result for HSV IgG antibodies indicates that the person has been infected with HSV at some point in their life. The presence of IgG antibodies does not indicate whether the individual is currently infected, but it does suggest that they may have immunity to future infections. A negative result means that the individual has not been exposed to HSV, or they have been infected too recently for the immune system to produce detectable antibodies.

What the Test Detects

The test is primarily used to determine whether an individual has been infected with HSV in the past. If the test is positive for HSV IgG antibodies, it means the person has been exposed to the virus at some point in their life. However, a positive test does not indicate the location of the infection, nor does it determine whether the individual is currently infected.

Preparation for the Test

The test detects the presence of IgG antibodies to HSV in the blood. IgG antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to an HSV infection. The test distinguishes between the two types of herpes simplex viruses – HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Sample Requirements

No special preparation is required for this test.
