Purpose of the Serum HBsAg Test

The Serum HBsAg test is typically ordered to diagnose a current or past HBV infection, monitor the effectiveness of treatment, and determine if someone is a carrier of the virus.

When this Serum HBsAg test is required

The test is typically ordered if you have symptoms of a liver infection, have been exposed to HBV, or if you are at high risk of contracting the virus.

What the Serum HBsAg Test Detects

The Serum HBsAg test is used to detect the presence of HBV surface antigen in the blood.

Preparation for the Serum HBsAg Test

No specific test preparation is required, but you should inform your healthcare provider if you are taking any medications that may affect the results

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample, usually drawn from a vein in the arm.

It’s important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and to discuss any concerns you may have about the test or its results. If you test positive for HBsAg, your healthcare provider may order additional tests to evaluate the extent of the infection and determine the appropriate treatment. It’s also important to take steps to prevent the spread of HBV to others, such as practicing safe sex, avoiding sharing personal items, and getting vaccinated against HBV if you are not already immune.
