Purpose of the Test

A serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test is done to measure the amount of nitrogen in the blood that comes from urea. It is primarily used to evaluate kidney function and monitor the effectiveness of treatments for kidney disease.

When this test is required

A normal BUN level for adults is typically between 7 and 20 mg/dL. Elevated levels of BUN can indicate impaired kidney function, dehydration, or other conditions that increase protein breakdown. Low levels of BUN may indicate liver disease or malnutrition.

What the Test Detects

The BUN test is used to evaluate kidney function. Elevated levels of BUN can indicate impaired kidney function, while low levels may indicate liver disease or malnutrition. BUN levels may also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatments for kidney disease.

Preparation for the Test

The BUN test measures the amount of urea nitrogen in the blood. Urea is a waste product formed in the liver as a result of protein breakdown. It is then carried to the kidneys and excreted in the urine. The BUN level reflects how well the kidneys are working to excrete urea.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for this test.
