Purpose of the Test

The Anti-Streptolysin O (ASO) test is used to detect a recent streptococcal infection. It measures the level of antibodies produced by the body against the streptococcus bacteria.

When this test is required

The ASO test is usually requested when a patient is suspected of having a streptococcal infection, and symptoms persist even after treatment with antibiotics. The test may also be requested if a patient is at risk of developing complications associated with streptococcal infections.

What the Test Detects

The ASO test measures the level of antibodies produced by the body against the streptococcus bacteria, specifically against the enzyme called streptolysin O that is produced by the bacteria.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is needed for the test. However, you should inform your healthcare provider if you are taking any medications that may interfere with the results.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample, which is usually taken from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

The ASO test is one of several tests that can be used to detect a recent streptococcal infection. Other tests may include a throat culture or a rapid strep test. It is important to inform your healthcare provider if you have recently been treated for a streptococcal infection or if you have a history of complications associated with these infections.
