Purpose of the Test

The serum anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) test is used to check for the presence of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme involved in the production of thyroid hormones. It is primarily used to diagnose autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.

When this test is required

The test may be requested when a person shows symptoms of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, such as fatigue, weight gain or loss, hair loss, and changes in heart rate. It may also be requested when there is a family history of autoimmune thyroid disease.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the levels of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase in the blood. The presence of these antibodies indicates that the immune system is attacking the thyroid gland, leading to autoimmune thyroid disease.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific test preparation needed. However, it is recommended to inform the healthcare provider about any medications being taken before the test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample, which can be collected through a simple venipuncture.

Additional Notes

The serum anti-TPO test is a useful tool for diagnosing autoimmune thyroid diseases. However, it may not detect all cases of the disease, especially in the early stages. It is recommended to discuss the test results with a healthcare provider for further guidance and treatment options.
