Purpose of the Test

This test is ordered when a person is suspected of having celiac disease. Symptoms of celiac disease can include diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, and fatigue. The test is also used to monitor the response to gluten-free diets in individuals who have been diagnosed with celiac disease.

When this test is required

This test is requested when a person is suspected of having celiac disease or when they are at increased risk for the disease.

What the Test Detects

This test measures the levels of anti-gliadin IgG antibodies in the blood.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is needed for this test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample, which is typically collected by inserting a needle into a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

Anti-gliadin IgG antibodies are not specific to celiac disease and can also be present in other conditions, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. A diagnosis of celiac disease is typically made based on a combination of clinical symptoms, laboratory tests, and intestinal biopsy results.
