Purpose of the Serum Anti-GAD 65 Test

The serum anti-GAD test is primarily used to aid in the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune disorders. It is used to detect the presence of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) autoantibodies in the blood, which are often present in people with type 1 diabetes and some other autoimmune diseases.

When this Serum Anti-GAD 65 test is required

The test is usually requested when a person has symptoms suggestive of type 1 diabetes or other autoimmune disorders, or when someone is at high risk for developing type 1 diabetes.

What the Serum Anti-GAD 65 Test Detects

The test measures the level of antibodies in the blood that are directed against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), an enzyme found in the pancreas. The presence of these antibodies indicates an autoimmune response and can be used to help diagnose type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune disorders.

Preparation for the Serum Anti-GAD 65 Test

No specific test preparation is usually required.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required to perform the test.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that the presence of anti-GAD antibodies is not specific to type 1 diabetes and can also be present in other autoimmune disorders. Additionally, some people with type 1 diabetes may not have detectable levels of anti-GAD antibodies.
