Purpose of the Test

The serum anti-endomysial antibody (EMA) IgA test is used to diagnose celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestine.

When this test is required

The test may be requested if a person has symptoms of celiac disease or if they are at high risk for the disease, such as having a family history of the condition.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the level of IgA antibodies against endomysial antigen in the blood. Endomysial antigens are proteins found in the connective tissue surrounding smooth muscle fibers.

Preparation for the Test

There is no special preparation required for the test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample, usually drawn from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

It is important to continue eating a normal diet that includes gluten before taking the EMA test, as avoiding gluten can cause the antibodies to decrease and make the test less accurate. In addition, people with selective IgA deficiency may not produce enough IgA antibodies to be detected by the test and may require alternative testing methods.
