Purpose of the Test

The serum anti-EBV IgM test is used to determine the current or recent exposure to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).

When this test is required

The test may be requested when a patient has symptoms of an EBV infection, such as fever, sore throat, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and malaise. It is also ordered to confirm a suspected diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis, especially if the patient has a negative anti-EBV IgG test result.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the levels of antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It specifically detects the presence of immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies to the virus.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is required, but the healthcare provider may advise the patient to avoid food, drink, and medications for a certain period before the test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that the test cannot distinguish between the different types of infections caused by the EBV, including infectious mononucleosis and other less severe illnesses. A healthcare provider will consider the patient’s medical history, symptoms, and other diagnostic tests to make a definitive diagnosis.
