Purpose of the Test

Serum anti-dsDNA (double-stranded DNA) test is ordered to help diagnose and monitor autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The test detects the presence of antibodies in the blood that target the body’s own DNA.

When this test is required

The test is requested when a healthcare practitioner suspects that someone has an autoimmune disease like SLE. The test may also be requested when someone with a known autoimmune disease has a flare-up or change in symptoms.

What the Test Detects

This test measures the presence of antibodies in the blood that target double-stranded DNA, which is a characteristic feature of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is needed for this test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

The test result must be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical findings and test results. A positive result does not necessarily mean that someone has SLE, as anti-dsDNA antibodies may also be present in other autoimmune diseases and infections. Similarly, some people with SLE may have negative anti-dsDNA antibody results.
