Purpose of the Test

Serum androstenedione levels are measured to evaluate the functioning of the adrenal gland and the ovaries or testes. It is often ordered as part of an evaluation of disorders related to excess or deficient androgen production, such as hirsutism, infertility, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

When this test is required

This test is usually ordered when there is clinical suspicion of an androgen-producing tumor or when an individual has symptoms of androgen excess, such as hirsutism, acne, and male pattern baldness.

What the Test Detects

This test measures the level of androstenedione in the blood. Androstenedione is a steroid hormone produced mainly by the adrenal gland, but also by the ovaries and testes.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific preparation needed for this test. However, certain medications, including hormone therapies and corticosteroids, can affect the test results. Hence, your healthcare provider may ask you to discontinue these medications before the test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

The test should not be done during pregnancy, as the levels of androstenedione are normally elevated during pregnancy. Androstenedione levels also vary with age and sex, so it is important to interpret the test results in the context of the patient’s age, sex, and medical history.
