Purpose of the Test

ASCA testing is used to help diagnose inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The presence of ASCA antibodies in the blood can help differentiate between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

When this test is required

ASCA testing may be ordered by a healthcare provider when IBD is suspected or to monitor the progression of the disease and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

What the Test Detects

ASCA testing measures the levels of ASCA antibodies in the blood, which are produced by the immune system in response to baker’s yeast. The presence of these antibodies can indicate an autoimmune response to the yeast.

Preparation for the Test

There is typically no special preparation needed for ASCA testing.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for ASCA testing.

Additional Notes

ASCA testing is not a definitive diagnostic test for IBD, and it should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory findings. Some individuals without IBD may have elevated levels of ASCA antibodies, so additional testing and evaluation may be needed to confirm a diagnosis.
