Purpose of the Test

These tests are used to diagnose the cause of diarrhea in infants and young children, as rotavirus and adenovirus are common causes of gastroenteritis in this population. These tests can also help to determine the appropriate course of treatment.

When this test is required

The test is typically requested when an infant or young child has diarrhea that lasts longer than a few days, is severe, and is accompanied by symptoms such as vomiting, fever, and dehydration. It may also be requested when there is an outbreak of gastroenteritis in a community or a daycare setting.

What the Test Detects

The rotavirus and adenovirus antigen tests detect the presence of the rotavirus and adenovirus in a stool sample. These viruses are common causes of gastroenteritis, a condition that causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Preparation for the Test

There are no specific test preparations needed for this test. However, it is important to inform the healthcare provider if the child has recently received a vaccine that contains live attenuated viruses, such as the rotavirus vaccine. This can affect the results of the test. The child should also not be taking antibiotics before the test, as this can interfere with the detection of the virus in the stool sample.

Sample Requirements

A stool sample is required for this test. The sample should be collected in a clean container and transported to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that the presence of a virus in the stool does not always indicate that the virus is the cause of the symptoms. Other factors such as bacterial infections, parasites, and food intolerances may also cause diarrhea. Additionally, the rotavirus and adenovirus antigen tests are not routinely recommended for adults with gastroenteritis as these viruses are less commonly the cause of illness in this population.
