Purpose of the Test

The Red Cell Antibody Screen or Indirect Coombs test is used to detect the presence of antibodies in the blood that may attack and destroy red blood cells. It is used to screen for and diagnose blood transfusion reactions, hemolytic disease of the newborn, and autoimmune disorders.

When this test is required

The test may be ordered when a patient needs a blood transfusion or is pregnant to determine if there are any antibodies present in the blood that may cause a reaction. It may also be ordered if a patient has anemia or a history of blood transfusion reactions.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the presence of antibodies in the blood that react with red blood cells. The test is performed by mixing the patient’s serum with donor red blood cells in the laboratory. If the serum contains antibodies that bind to the donor red blood cells, a reaction occurs, indicating the presence of antibodies in the serum.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific preparation required for the Red Cell Antibody Screen or Indirect Coombs test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for the test, which is typically taken from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

The Red Cell Antibody Screen or Indirect Coombs test is a screening test, and a positive result should be followed up with additional testing to identify the specific antibody present. The results of the test should be interpreted in conjunction with the patient’s medical history and other laboratory tests.
