Purpose of the Test

The Pura Tone Audiometry (PTA) test is done to measure a person’s hearing ability and identify any hearing loss. It is commonly used in audiology to diagnose hearing loss, determine its type and severity, and determine the best course of treatment.

When this test is required

A PTA test may be requested when a person is experiencing hearing problems, or as part of a routine hearing screening. It may also be ordered as part of a diagnostic workup for certain medical conditions that can cause hearing loss, such as Meniere’s disease, otosclerosis, or acoustic neuroma.

What the Test Detects

During a PTA test, the person is asked to listen to a series of tones or beeps played through headphones or speakers. The audiologist will vary the pitch and volume of the sounds to determine the softest sounds the person can hear at different frequencies. The results of the test are plotted on an audiogram, which is a graph that shows the person’s hearing ability at different frequencies

Preparation for the Test

There is no special preparation required for a PTA test. However, it is important to inform the audiologist of any medications the person is taking, as some medications can affect hearing test results.

Sample Requirements

No specific sample is required for this test. The test is typically performed in an audiology clinic or medical facility, using specialized equipment.
