Purpose of the Test

The protein (CSF) test measures the levels of protein in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The test is used to evaluate a variety of neurological conditions that can affect the brain and spinal cord.

When this test is required

The test is typically ordered when a healthcare provider suspects a neurological condition such as multiple sclerosis, meningitis, encephalitis, or a brain or spinal cord tumor. The test may also be ordered to monitor the progress of these conditions or to check for infection or inflammation in the CSF.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the levels of protein in the CSF. Elevated levels of protein in the CSF can indicate the presence of infection, inflammation, tumors, or other neurological conditions.

No special preparation is required for this test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that is collected through a procedure called a lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap.

The protein (CSF) test is just one tool used in the diagnosis and management of neurological conditions. Additional testing, imaging studies, and clinical evaluation may be necessary to fully assess and manage the patient’s condition.
