Purpose of the Test

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It can lead to irregular periods, high levels of androgens (male hormones), and the formation of cysts on the ovaries. This test is used to evaluate and diagnose PCOS, by measuring several hormones in the blood that are often affected in women with the condition.

When this test is required

This test is usually requested if a woman is experiencing symptoms of PCOS, has irregular periods, or is having difficulty getting pregnant. It may also be requested if a woman has a family history of PCOS.

What the Test Detects

This test typically measures several hormones in the blood that are often affected in women with PCOS, including luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and insulin.

Preparation for the Test

There are no specific test preparations needed, but your healthcare provider may advise you to fast for a few hours before the test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

This test is just one part of the diagnosis for PCOS. Your healthcare provider may also perform a physical exam, review your medical history, and perform other tests, such as an ultrasound of the ovaries, to make a diagnosis. Treatment for PCOS may include lifestyle changes, medication, or surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.
