Purpose of the Test

The PML-RARA Fusion Detection by FISH test is used to help diagnose APL, monitor disease progression, and guide treatment decisions. APL is a subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) that has a high response rate to targeted therapy, so early and accurate diagnosis is important.

When this test is required

The test may be requested by a healthcare provider when a patient is suspected of having APL or when monitoring disease progression and response to treatment.

What the Test Detects

The test looks for the PML-RARA fusion gene, which is created when parts of two different chromosomes (chromosomes 15 and 17) break and rejoin in a way that creates a new gene. The PML-RARA fusion gene is found in more than 95% of APL cases.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific test preparation needed for the PML-RARA Fusion Detection by FISH test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a bone marrow or blood sample from the patient.

Additional Notes

While the PML-RARA Fusion Detection by FISH test is a useful tool for diagnosing and monitoring APL, it is typically used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests and clinical evaluation. Additionally, while targeted therapy has been shown to be effective in treating APL, individual patient responses to treatment can vary.
