Purpose of the Test

The test measures the level of a protein called N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in the blood. NT-proBNP is released by the heart in response to increased pressure or stress on the heart muscle. Elevated levels of NT-proBNP can indicate the presence of heart failure.

When this test is required

The test is usually requested if a person has symptoms suggestive of heart failure, such as shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling in the legs, or rapid or irregular heartbeat. It may also be ordered in people with known heart failure to monitor the effectiveness of treatment or to detect a worsening of the condition.

What the Test Detects

Plasma NT-proBNP test measures the level of a protein called N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in the blood. NT-proBNP is released by the heart in response to increased pressure or stress on the heart muscle.

Preparation for the Test

There is usually no special preparation needed for a plasma NT-proBNP test. However, you should let your healthcare provider know about any medications you are taking, as some medications can affect the results of the test. You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period of time before the test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample, usually taken from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that NT-proBNP levels can also be elevated in other conditions, such as pulmonary embolism, renal failure, and certain cancers. Therefore, the test is not specific to heart failure and should be interpreted in the context of a person’s overall health and clinical history.
