Purpose of the Test

The Plasma Glucose (Before Lunch) test is used to measure the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood before lunch. It is used to screen for and diagnose diabetes and to monitor glucose levels in people with diabetes.

When this test is required

The test may be requested if a person shows symptoms of diabetes, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss. It may also be requested to monitor glucose levels in people with diabetes who are on medications or insulin therapy.

What the Test Detects

The test measures the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood before lunch. Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body’s cells and is regulated by the hormone insulin.

Preparation for the Test

The patient should fast for at least 8 hours before the test and should not eat or drink anything except water after the fast until the test is performed.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for the test, which is typically taken from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

The Plasma Glucose (Before Lunch) test is just one of several tests used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. Additional tests, such as the Hemoglobin A1c test or the Glucose Tolerance test, may be needed to confirm a diagnosis or monitor glucose levels over time. It is important to follow up with a healthcare provider to interpret the results and develop a treatment plan if necessary.
