Purpose of the Test

The Nasal Swab for Fungus C/S with Fungus Stain (KOH) test is performed to detect the presence of fungal infection in the nasal passages. This test is usually ordered when a person has signs and symptoms of a fungal infection in the nose, such as nasal congestion, runny nose, and nosebleeds.

When this test is required

A healthcare provider may order this test when a person has the following symptoms: Persistent nasal congestion , Nasal discharge that is yellow or green in color , Nosebleeds , Facial pain or pressure

What the Test Detects

Culture involves growing the nasal swab sample in a laboratory setting to identify the specific type of fungus responsible for the infection. The staining process involves using a potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution and a fungal stain to examine the nasal sample under a microscope, allowing the lab technician to visualize the fungal elements in the sample.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is required for this test, but it is important to inform your healthcare provider if you are taking any medications or have any medical conditions that may affect the results.

Sample Requirements

To perform the test, a sample is collected from the inside of the nostrils using a swab. The sample is then examined under a microscope after applying a potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution and a fungal stain.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that the test results may take several weeks to obtain as the culture requires time to grow. False-negative results are also possible if the nasal swab sample is not properly collected or if the fungal infection is limited to a small area of the nasal passages.
