Purpose of the Test

The test may be ordered if a person has symptoms that suggest cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, such as clear fluid leaking from the nose, headaches, or changes in the sense of smell. Glucose testing can help to differentiate between cerebrospinal fluid and other fluids that may be present in the nasal cavity.

When this test is required

The test may be requested if a healthcare provider suspects that a person has cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, which can cause symptoms such as clear fluid leaking from the nose, headaches, or changes in the sense of smell. The test is usually done in conjunction with other diagnostic tests, such as imaging studies or laboratory tests on the fluid itself.

What the Test Detects

The nasal secretion glucose test measures the level of glucose (sugar) in the nasal secretions

Preparation for the Test

There is usually no special preparation needed for a nasal secretion glucose test. However, you should let your healthcare provider know about any medications you are taking, as some medications can affect the results of the test. Your healthcare provider will provide specific instructions if any preparation is necessary.

Sample Requirements

To perform the test, a healthcare provider will need to collect a sample of nasal secretions using a swab or other collection device. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that the nasal secretion glucose test is not a definitive test for cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, and additional testing may be required to confirm a diagnosis. False-positive results can occur in individuals with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or infections, that can affect glucose levels in the nasal secretions. False-negative results can occur if the test is performed too late in the course of the disease, after the glucose levels in the nasal secretions have returned to normal.
