Purpose of the Test

The test is typically done to evaluate the soft tissues of the upper limb, including the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones, for any signs of injury, inflammation, or degenerative changes that may be causing pain, swelling, weakness, or other symptoms.

When this test is required

The test is typically requested by doctors when a person has persistent pain or discomfort in the arm or shoulder, as well as other symptoms such as weakness, limited mobility, or numbness. It may also be ordered to evaluate the response to treatment, such as physical therapy or medication.

What the Test Detects

The test produces detailed images of the upper limb and its surrounding tissues, including the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, without the use of contrast dye.

Preparation for the Test

Patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test, as well as to remove any metal objects, including jewelry and clothing with metal fastenings, as they can interfere with the MRI image.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

MRI does not use ionizing radiation, so there is no risk of exposure to harmful radiation. However, because the MRI machine uses a strong magnetic field, patients with metal implants or devices such as pacemakers or cochlear implants may not be able to have an MRI. Patients with claustrophobia may also have difficulty tolerating the test, as the machine is enclosed and may feel confining.
