Purpose of the Test

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the trigeminal nerve with contrast is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the trigeminal nerve and its associated structures. This test is used to detect abnormalities in the trigeminal nerve and surrounding tissues, such as tumors, inflammation, and vascular abnormalities.

When this test is required

An MRI trigeminal with contrast may be requested by a doctor or specialist if you are experiencing symptoms such as facial pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness that may be related to the trigeminal nerve. The test may also be ordered as a follow-up to other diagnostic tests, such as a CT scan or X-ray.

What the Test Detects

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the trigeminal nerve with contrast is used to evaluate the trigeminal nerve and its associated structures, including the brainstem, cerebellopontine angle, and surrounding blood vessels.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, you may be asked to remove any metallic objects such as jewelry, watches, and hairpins. You may also need to change into a hospital gown. Depending on the facility, you may be given an injection of a contrast material to help enhance the images of the trigeminal nerve.

Sample Requirements

A sample is not required for an MRI trigeminal with contrast, as it is a non-invasive imaging test.

Additional Notes

It is important to inform your doctor if you have any metal implants or devices in your body, as they can interfere with the MRI. You may also be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period before the test. During the MRI, you will lie on a table that slides into a large tunnel-like machine. You will need to remain still during the imaging process, which may take 30 minutes to an hour. If contrast material is used, a small needle will be inserted into your vein to inject the contrast material.
