This test is used to evaluate joint pain, swelling, stiffness, or instability that cannot be diagnosed with other imaging tests. It is helpful in diagnosing joint conditions such as cartilage tears, ligament injuries, or arthritis.
When this test is required
This test may be ordered if a patient has persistent joint pain, swelling, stiffness, or instability. It may also be ordered if other imaging tests such as X-rays or ultrasound did not provide enough information to make a diagnosis.
What the Test Detects
This test is used to examine the inside of a joint using MRI technology and contrast material. The contrast material is injected into the joint space to make the joint structures more visible on the MRI images.
Preparation for the Test
The patient may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the procedure. They may also be asked to stop taking certain medications, including blood thinners, before the test. The patient will also need to inform their doctor if they have any allergies or medical conditions that may affect the test.
Sample Requirements
No sample is required for this test.
Additional Notes
The injection of contrast material into the joint may cause temporary discomfort or swelling. In rare cases, it may cause an allergic reaction. Patients should inform their doctor if they have any allergies or medical conditions that may affect the test. After the test, patients may be advised to avoid strenuous activities for a few hours and to drink plenty of fluids to help flush out the contrast material.
