Purpose of the Test

MRS can help in diagnosing various brain disorders, including brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, metabolic disorders, and some forms of dementia. It can also be used to monitor the effects of treatments on the brain and to identify early signs of brain damage due to stroke or other neurological conditions.

When this test is required

MRS may be ordered when conventional MRI or CT scans do not provide sufficient information about a patient’s condition or to monitor the effects of treatments on the brain.

What the Test Detects

MRS measures the levels of various chemicals and compounds in the brain, including neurotransmitters, amino acids, and other metabolites. By analyzing these levels, doctors can gain insights into the underlying biochemistry of brain disorders and assess the effectiveness of treatments.

Preparation for the Test

No specific preparation is needed for MRS. However, patients should inform their doctors if they have any metal implants, such as pacemakers, artificial heart valves, or cochlear implants, as these may interfere with the magnetic field used during the test.

Additional Notes
