This test is ordered to investigate issues related to salivary glands or ducts, such as pain, swelling, or obstruction, and to detect any abnormalities like tumors, stones, or inflammation.
When this test is required
This test may be requested if a patient is experiencing symptoms related to the salivary glands or if an abnormality is detected during a physical exam or other imaging tests.
What the Test Detects
MRI Sialography without contrast is used to visualize the salivary glands and their ducts in detail, without the use of a contrast agent. The images produced can help diagnose conditions such as salivary gland tumors, salivary gland stones, and inflammation of the salivary glands. It can also be used to evaluate the ductal anatomy and detect any obstructions.
Preparation for the Test
Your doctor may recommend this test if you are experiencing symptoms such as dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, or a lump in the mouth or neck. It may also be ordered if an abnormality is found during a routine physical exam or other imaging tests.
Sample Requirements
No sample is required for this test.
Additional Notes
This test is generally safe, but some people may experience claustrophobia or discomfort from lying still during the procedure. It is important to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or allergies you may have before undergoing the test.
