Purpose of the Test

To diagnose the cause of shoulder pain, swelling, or weaknessTo identify tears or other injuries to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the shoulderTo detect abnormalities of the bone and cartilage of the shoulder jointTo evaluate the effectiveness of treatments for shoulder conditions

When this test is required

Your doctor may request an MRI of the shoulder if you have persistent shoulder pain, swelling, or weakness that cannot be diagnosed with other imaging tests or physical examinations.

What the Test Detects

This test produces detailed images of the shoulder joint, including the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues. It can detect injuries or abnormalities that may be causing shoulder pain or dysfunction.

Preparation for the Test

Inform your doctor if you have any metal in your body, such as a pacemaker or metal implants.Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or snaps.Remove any jewelry or accessories, such as watches or earrings, that contain metal.Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for an MRI of the shoulder.

Additional Notes

The test is painless and non-invasive.You will need to lie still on a table during the test, which can take up to an hour.You may be given a contrast agent through an intravenous (IV) line to enhance the images produced by the MRI.
