Purpose of the Test

When this test is required

An MRI test may be requested if a healthcare provider suspects a medical condition that cannot be diagnosed with other imaging tests, such as X-rays or CT scans.

What the Test Detects

During an MRI test, the body is exposed to a strong magnetic field and radio waves, which interact with the body’s hydrogen atoms to create detailed images of the body’s internal structures.

Preparation for the Test

In most cases, no specific preparation is required for an MRI test. However, the patient may be asked to avoid wearing any metal objects, such as jewelry or clothing with zippers, as they can interfere with the MRI’s magnetic field.

No sample is required for an MRI test.

Additional Notes

MRI tests are generally safe and painless, but some people may feel claustrophobic inside the MRI machine. In these cases, the healthcare provider may prescribe a sedative to help the patient relax. Additionally, people with certain metal implants, such as pacemakers or cochlear implants, may not be eligible for an MRI test.
