Purpose of the Test

MRI of the prostate is done to assess for prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland) and other abnormalities in the prostate gland.

When this test is required

It is typically requested when other tests, such as a digital rectal exam or PSA test, indicate the presence of an abnormality or when there are concerning symptoms.

What the Test Detects

MRI of the prostate provides detailed images of the prostate gland, surrounding tissues, and lymph nodes, allowing doctors to assess for abnormalities, such as tumors or infections.

Preparation for the Test

Before the MRI, the patient will need to remove all metal objects from their body, including jewelry and clothing with metal zippers or buttons. The patient will also need to inform the technologist if they have any metal implants or devices in their body, as these may interfere with the MRI. In some cases, a contrast agent may be administered through an IV to help enhance the images, and fasting may be required beforehand.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for the MRI of the prostate.

Additional Notes

MRI of the prostate is a safe, non-invasive test that does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation. However, it may not be suitable for all patients, particularly those with pacemakers or other implanted devices. It is important to inform your doctor and the technologist of any medical conditions or devices before the test.
