This test may be ordered by a doctor to evaluate the bones, discs, and nerves of the lumbar spine. It can be used to detect abnormalities such as herniated discs, tumors, spinal stenosis, or injuries.
When this test is required
This test may be ordered if a patient has symptoms such as lower back pain, sciatica, or weakness in the legs. It may also be ordered as part of a diagnostic workup for conditions such as degenerative disc disease or spondylolisthesis.
What the Test Detects
This test uses MRI technology to produce detailed images of the lumbar spine without the use of a contrast agent. The MRI machine uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create images of the spine, which can be used to evaluate the bones, discs, and nerves of the lumbar spine.
Preparation for the Test
The patient may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test. They may also be asked to remove any metal objects from their body and to wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Sample Requirements
No sample is required for this test.
Additional Notes
The test is painless and non-invasive, but some patients may experience discomfort from lying still for an extended period. Patients with certain medical conditions, such as claustrophobia or metal implants, may not be able to undergo an MRI and will need to discuss alternative options with their doctor.
