Purpose of the Test

This test is typically requested to evaluate conditions affecting the lower back, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, or sciatica.

When this test is required

An MRI lumbar spine screening may be requested when other imaging tests, such as X-rays or CT scans, are not able to provide enough information about the lower back. It may also be used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests or procedures, such as a neurological exam or electromyography (EMG), to help your healthcare provider to form a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan.

What the Test Detects

During an MRI lumbar spine screening, a strong magnetic field and radio waves are used to produce detailed images of the lumbar spine. The images can help your healthcare provider to identify and evaluate any abnormalities or damage to the spine, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or tumors.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, you should inform your healthcare provider if you have any metal implants, pacemaker, or other medical devices, as these may interfere with the MRI scan. You may also be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period before the test.

Additional Notes

MRI lumbar spine screening is generally safe and painless, but some people may experience mild discomfort or claustrophobia during the test. You should inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, have kidney problems, or have had a previous allergic reaction to contrast agents, as a contrast agent may be used to enhance the visibility of certain structures in the images.
