Purpose of the Test

This test is typically ordered to evaluate blood flow and detect any abnormalities or blockages in the veins, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and other vascular conditions.

When this test is required

The test is typically requested if a person has symptoms such as pain, swelling, or discoloration in the arms or legs, shortness of breath, or other signs of a blood clot or vascular problem. The test may also be used to monitor the progression of certain vascular diseases or evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

What the Test Detects

The test produces detailed images of the veins in the body, without the use of contrast dye, to detect any abnormalities or blockages.

Preparation for the Test

Patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test, as well as to remove any metal objects, including jewelry and clothing with metal fastenings, as they can interfere with the MRI image. Patients may also need to stop taking certain medications before the test, especially if they affect blood clotting.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

Patients with kidney problems or other medical conditions may not be able to tolerate the contrast dye used in the MRI Venogram with Contrast and may need to have a different type of test.
