Purpose of the Test

This test is typically ordered to evaluate suspected conditions of the inner ear, such as vestibular schwannoma (a non-cancerous growth on the nerve that affects hearing and balance) or other tumors affecting the auditory nerve, as well as to investigate hearing loss or vertigo.

When this test is required

An MRI Internal Auditory Canal (IAC) with contrast may be requested by a physician or specialist if they suspect an inner ear condition, such as a vestibular schwannoma or other tumor, or if a patient experiences hearing loss or vertigo.

What the Test Detects

This test produces detailed images of the internal auditory canal using MRI technology. The test uses a contrast agent to help highlight certain areas, such as tumors or inflammation.

Preparation for the Test

In some cases, you may be asked to fast for a few hours before the test to ensure that the contrast material is better absorbed by your body. Additionally, it is important to inform the radiologist or technologist if you have any allergies or kidney problems, as the contrast material used in the test can affect these conditions.

Sample Requirements

No samples are required for this test.

Additional Notes

As with any medical imaging test that uses contrast material, there is a small risk of an allergic reaction or other adverse reactions to the contrast agent. Additionally, MRI tests involve the use of strong magnetic fields, and patients with certain medical devices, such as pacemakers or cochlear implants, may not be able to undergo the test. It is important to inform the radiologist or technologist if you have any medical devices or conditions that may be affected by the MRI.
