Purpose of the Test

An MRI of the face without contrast may be ordered by a doctor to diagnose conditions such as facial trauma, tumors, infections, or abnormalities in the bones or soft tissues of the face.

When this test is required

An MRI of the face without contrast may be requested by a doctor if a patient is experiencing symptoms such as facial pain, swelling, or numbness, or if a previous imaging test was inconclusive.

What the Test Detects

The MRI of the face without contrast produces detailed images of the bones, soft tissues, and nerves in the face. This allows doctors to identify any abnormalities, such as tumors, infections, or abnormalities in the bones or soft tissues of the face.

Preparation for the Test

Before the MRI, patients may be asked to remove all metal objects from their body, as these can interfere with the magnetic field of the machine. Additionally, patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

MRI of the face without contrast is a safe and noninvasive test. However, it is not recommended for patients with certain medical conditions, such as pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or cochlear implants, as the magnetic field can interfere with these devices. Patients should inform their doctor if they have any implanted medical devices or if they are pregnant before undergoing an MRI of the face without contrast.
