Purpose of the Test

This test may be ordered to evaluate various conditions affecting the elbow, such as fractures, tendon or ligament tears, joint inflammation, arthritis, or other soft tissue injuries. It can also help diagnose nerve compression syndromes, such as cubital tunnel syndrome or radial tunnel syndrome.

When this test is required

A healthcare provider may request an MRI elbow without contrast when they suspect that the patient has a condition affecting the elbow joint that requires further investigation, or when other imaging tests such as X-rays or ultrasound do not provide sufficient information. The test is usually performed in an outpatient setting.

What the Test Detects

The MRI elbow without contrast produces detailed images of the elbow joint, including the bones, soft tissues, tendons, and ligaments. This type of MRI is different from the MRI with contrast, which requires the use of a contrast agent to highlight certain areas of the image.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is usually needed for an MRI of the elbow. However, you will need to remove any metal objects from your body, such as jewelry or hearing aids, as these can interfere with the MRI machine. You may also be asked to wear a hospital gown during the exam.It is important to inform your doctor if you have any metal implants or devices, such as a pacemaker, artificial joint, or cochlear implant, as these may prevent you from having an MRI. You should also inform your doctor if you are pregnant or have any other medical conditions that may be affected by the magnetic field of the MRI.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for an MRI of the elbow.

Additional Notes

MRI elbow without contrast is generally considered a safe and non-invasive test. However, the strong magnetic field used in the MRI exam may cause some discomfort or anxiety in some patients. The test is not recommended for pregnant women or individuals with certain metallic implants, such as pacemakers. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of any medical conditions or medications they are taking before undergoing the MRI exam.
