Purpose of the Test

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) of the dorsal spine with and without contrast is performed to evaluate the spinal cord, nerve roots, and surrounding tissues in the middle section of the back. It can help identify any abnormalities such as herniated discs, spinal cord compression, or tumors.

When this test is required

The test may be requested if a patient has symptoms such as back pain, numbness, or tingling sensation in the middle section of the back or arms. It may also be requested if the patient has a history of spinal cord injury, spinal cord tumors, or other spinal cord conditions.

What the Test Detects

The MRI scan of the dorsal spine with and without contrast creates detailed images of the spinal cord, nerve roots, and surrounding tissues. The contrast material injected into the patient’s vein enhances the images and helps the radiologist distinguish between normal and abnormal tissues.

Preparation for the Test

The patient should inform the doctor if they have any metallic implants, pacemakers, or other medical devices before undergoing the test. They may be asked to remove any metal jewelry, watches, or belts that may interfere with the magnetic field of the MRI machine. Fasting may not be necessary, but the patient should avoid eating or drinking anything for a few hours before the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

MRI scans use a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce images of the body, and are generally considered safe. However, patients with metal implants or other medical devices may not be able to undergo the test, as it can interfere with these devices. Patients should inform their doctor of any medical conditions, including allergies, before undergoing the test.
