Purpose of the Test

This test is typically requested to evaluate trauma or injury to the clavicle, such as a fracture or dislocation.

When this test is required

An MRI clavicle without contrast may be requested when other imaging tests, such as X-rays or CT scans, are not able to provide enough information about the clavicle injury. It may also be used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests or procedures, such as a physical exam or medical history, to help your healthcare provider to form a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan.

What the Test Detects

During an MRI clavicle without contrast, a strong magnetic field and radio waves are used to produce detailed images of the clavicle’s bony structure. The images can help your healthcare provider to identify and evaluate any abnormalities or damage to the clavicle, such as a fracture, dislocation, or other injury.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, you should inform your healthcare provider if you have any metal implants, pacemaker, or other medical devices, as these may interfere with the MRI scan. You may also be asked to avoid wearing jewelry or other metal objects during the test.

Sample Requirements

No samples are required for this test.

Additional Notes

MRI clavicle without contrast is generally safe and painless, but some people may experience mild discomfort or claustrophobia during the test. You should inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or have any other medical conditions that may be affected by the strong magnetic field used during the test.
