Purpose of the Test

An MRI of the Cervico-Dorsal and Lumbar Spine may be recommended for individuals who have:Persistent or worsening back or neck painSuspected herniated discsNumbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or legsTrauma to the spine or surrounding tissuesSuspected spinal cord injuryUnexplained changes in bowel or bladder function

When this test is required

An MRI of Cervico-Dorsal and Lumbar Spine is usually ordered by a doctor when an individual is experiencing back or neck pain, or if there is a suspected spinal cord injury, herniated discs, or spinal stenosis.

What the Test Detects

The MRI of Cervico-Dorsal and Lumbar Spine creates detailed images of the spinal cord, spinal nerves, intervertebral discs, and surrounding tissues. The images produced can help identify abnormalities, such as herniated discs, spinal cord injury, spinal stenosis, or tumors.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, patients will need to remove any metal objects, such as jewelry or watches, and inform their doctor if they have any metal implants, such as a pacemaker or joint replacement. In some cases, a contrast dye may be used during the procedure, which requires additional preparation such as fasting or medication adjustments.

Sample Requirements

No samples are required for an MRI.

Additional Notes

The procedure is painless, but it can be loud and cramped. Some people may experience claustrophobia during the test, in which case the patient can discuss this with their doctor beforehand, and they may be given a sedative to help them relax. Additionally, individuals with metal implants, such as pacemakers or joint replacements, may not be eligible for an MRI.
