Purpose of the Test

An MRI of any joint of the lower limb without contrast may be ordered by a doctor to diagnose conditions such as injuries, tears, inflammation, or arthritis in the joints of the lower limb.

When this test is required

An MRI of any joint of the lower limb without contrast may be requested by a doctor if a patient is experiencing symptoms such as pain, swelling, stiffness, or limited range of motion in the joints of the lower limb.

What the Test Detects

The MRI of any joint of the lower limb without contrast produces detailed images of the joints in the lower limb, including the hip, knee, ankle, and foot. The test can help to diagnose conditions such as injuries, tears, inflammation, or arthritis in the joints of the lower limb.

Preparation for the Test

Before the MRI, patients may be asked to remove all metal objects from their body, as these can interfere with the magnetic field of the machine. Additionally, patients may be asked to avoid wearing clothing with metal zippers, snaps, or buttons. There are typically no dietary restrictions or other preparation needed for an MRI of any joint of the lower limb without contrast.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

MRI of any joint of the lower limb without contrast is a safe and noninvasive test. However, patients with certain medical conditions, such as pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or cochlear implants, may not be able to undergo an MRI. Additionally, patients who experience claustrophobia or anxiety in enclosed spaces may need to receive medication or other accommodations before undergoing an MRI.
