Purpose of the Test

This test is used to evaluate the cervical spine and to detect any abnormalities, such as herniated discs, tumors, or spinal cord injuries.

When this test is required

This test may be ordered if a patient has symptoms such as neck pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling in the arms or hands. It may also be ordered as part of a diagnostic workup for conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, or cervical radiculopathy.

What the Test Detects

This test is used to examine the cervical spine using MRI technology without the use of contrast material. The MRI machine uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of the cervical spine.

Preparation for the Test

The patient may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test. They may also be asked to stop taking certain medications, including blood thinners, before the test. The patient will also need to inform their doctor if they have any allergies or medical conditions that may affect the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

The MRI machine may cause discomfort for patients who are claustrophobic or anxious. Patients may be given sedatives to help them relax during the test.
