Purpose of the Test

An MRI of the cervical spine may be ordered for screening purposes in certain populations, such as individuals with a family history of spinal cord conditions or those with a history of neck injuries. The test can also be used to diagnose a variety of conditions that affect the cervical spine, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and tumors.

When this test is required

An MRI of the cervical spine may be requested by a doctor if a patient is experiencing symptoms such as neck pain, weakness or numbness in the arms or hands, or difficulty with balance or coordination. The test may also be ordered for screening purposes in certain populations.

What the Test Detects

The MRI of the cervical spine produces detailed images of the cervical vertebrae, intervertebral discs, and surrounding soft tissues. The test can help to diagnose conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and tumors.

Preparation for the Test

Before the MRI, patients may be asked to remove all metal objects from their body, as these can interfere with the magnetic field of the machine. Additionally, patients may be asked to avoid wearing clothing with metal zippers, snaps, or buttons. There are typically no dietary restrictions or other preparation needed for an MRI of the cervical spine.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

MRI of the cervical spine is a safe and noninvasive test. However, patients with certain medical conditions, such as pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or cochlear implants, may not be able to undergo an MRI. Additionally, patients who experience claustrophobia or anxiety in enclosed spaces may need to receive medication or other accommodations before undergoing an MRI.
