Purpose of the Test

MRA of the spine is used to evaluate the blood vessels in the spinal column. It can detect narrowing or blockages in the arteries or veins that supply blood to the spinal cord, which can cause conditions such as spinal stenosis or ischemia. It can also be used to evaluate the blood flow to tumors or other abnormalities in the spine.

When this test is required

MRA of the spine may be requested by a healthcare provider if a patient has symptoms or a medical history that suggests a problem with the blood vessels in the spinal column.

What the Test Detects

MRA of the spine uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology to create detailed images of the blood vessels in the spinal column.

Preparation for the Test

Patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for several hours before the test. They should also inform their healthcare provider if they have any metal in their body, such as a pacemaker, as it may interfere with the MRI machine.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for MRA of the spine.

Additional Notes

MRA of the spine is a noninvasive test that does not use ionizing radiation. However, it does require the use of a strong magnetic field and radio waves, so patients with certain types of metal in their body may not be able to have the test. Patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have any metal in their body, such as a pacemaker or metallic implants.
