Purpose of the Test

MRI Brain & Neck without contrast is a non-invasive imaging technique used to visualize the brain and neck structures in detail. It helps in identifying structural abnormalities, such as tumors, aneurysms, and vascular malformations, and also to diagnose conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, and degenerative diseases.

When this test is required

This test may be requested by a doctor if a patient is experiencing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, numbness, weakness, or tingling in the neck, face, or arms. It may also be ordered to investigate the cause of a stroke, or to monitor the progression of a disease.

What the Test Detects

The MRI Brain & Neck without contrast test produces detailed images of the brain and neck structures, such as the brainstem, cerebellum, cervical spinal cord, blood vessels, and soft tissues, using a strong magnetic field and radio waves.

Preparation for the Test

The patient may need to remove any metal objects or jewelry, and change into a hospital gown before the test. Depending on the medical condition and the area of the brain and neck being examined, the patient may also be required to refrain from eating or drinking for a few hours before the test.

Sample Requirements

No sample is required for this test.

Additional Notes

The MRI Brain & Neck without contrast is a safe and non-invasive test, but it is not suitable for everyone. Patients who have metallic implants or devices, such as pacemakers or cochlear implants, may not be able to undergo this test. Pregnant women should inform their doctor before undergoing this test. The test may take up to an hour or more to complete, and the patient will need to lie still inside the MRI machine during this time.
